I'm glad my tuning article looks comprehensible and useful. Thanks. My newest onager is only 1.5 inches long (Tiny Onager), so its not quite suited for the big chunk. I was at the Burlington Pumpkin Pitch a few times, but I really haven't been doing any hurling in the last couple of years. I just check in in the fall and see what new treb designs are out, and if Chucky has beaten the air cannons yet ;)

craig,
this is marc from team chucky.
i dont get on the computer much and just found this site last week while searching for info about torsion bundle pretensioning. your article on tuning was outstanding and would take years off of the leaning curve for both novice and experienced chunkers. sorry about my banters on the other hurl but when i would get alerted by daneboy about some of the posts i would respond with a bit of anger.
how is your machine? i hope things are going well and look foward to seeing you at the chunk.
marc

We could add a trebuchet:tuning page, and link it from the treb tuning section on the tuning page (and migrate the treb tuning stuff). Adding such a chart there would be ok, but be sure to note that it is mostly targeted at FCW/HCWs with mass ratios around X and normal proportions, and that the factors may differ on different trebuchets. For example, its possible for lighter projectiles to go both lower (often the case if you have too much drag on the sling like some very large machines do, or machines with heavy arms in general), or higher (generally the case for most machines).

For each variable it would be good to list, the variable, effects, cause, some exceptions.

My tuning guide is very abstract, and not a practical set of instructions which is what most people are looking for, so I agree some sort of chart like that would be a very good idea. Feel free to add/edit pages. I take a look at all edits, but I don't really have time to do much myself at the moment. If you need help integrating new pages into the navigation (most of it uses the page categories (that thing before the ":" in the url, tags, and the page parent, settable at the bottom options), let me know.

I was thinking that somewhere in the trebuchet pages there should be a section that discusses the effect of changing certain variables has on the release of the projectile. Longer sling length, lower release, more closed hook, lower release, lighter projectile, lower release. Those are the variables and results of which I am fairly sure. The list should also include changing counterweight, arm length, counterweight arm length, arm weight, and maybe some more variables. These ones we would need some general testing to see what their effect would be. I think you have some smaller trebuchets that would make this testing a little easier. The chart would need to contain a disclaimer that these are the results of relatively minor changes made to an already optimized machine.

The need for this chart would be during competitions. Say your machine was well optimized on your first throw. For your second throw you want to add more weight to try and increase distance. Should I make my sling longer or shorter to still have a good timing? or should I open or close the pin to keep the optimum release angle. The chart would not be able to tell you how much it should be changed, but would give you a starting direction for which way to change one variable when you have adjusted something else.

I decided that the formatting and editing tools here are great, and people might want to use them for their own personal hurling information such as the plans they used for one of their own devices, or updates on status or something like that. For somethings this works better than the blogs on The Hurl. Read about the new personal pages in the FAQ or my new Admin Blog.

I guess if groups or teams wanted to be able to share editing a page or set of pages I could set that up too upon request.

Any thoughts about this? Sound like a good idea?

They can be both, but I didn't want to make duplicates. A treb can have a 500 pound FCW for example. I think it might be good to put them in both places. You can change it if you want. I will get to it eventually if you don't.
By the way, this should be is the discussion topic for the page. All the content pages should have a little discuss button on the bottom that will make a discussion topic for them.

When you're on any wikidot page there should be a login link in the extreme upper right corner. If that does not work I can put a join module on the main page.

Yes, a few people might post some stuff that should be on the other hurl here, but we can redirect them to it (where they can upload files) and delete their topics here (move to deleted).

I'm glad you think the site will work. We already have some good content, though I wrote practically all of it my self (This is easier to update than my site).

OK I am starting to see your vision for this site. I think it will work.

The only problem will be when the users discover the ease of free discussion over here - what's to stop them from stampeding?

I guess a preemptive setup and definition of the catagories would help but if there is anything like "General Hurling" then watch out.

On a design note - Is there anyway to get a login box without having to go through "How to join this site?"

Looks like if for some reason we wanted ads here (So I would get money?) I could add some soon (Feature almost done). They are working on that, but I think I will pass on the Ads. I hadn't really though about site revenue at all. These guys plan to open up a premium service (With unlimited private wikis, more file space, secure transactions and stuff we dont't need) later to make money. That shouldn't bother us. We can stay here for free with no ads. I can download a backup of all our content, so if this site dies we dont lose everything, we just lose the viewer so we get the plain text source files…

The point is, say I want to post information about my design, the FAKA. I can make http://www.spincraftsoftware.com/Files/MyHurl/FAKA.html or I could define it here where if will be accessible and arranged with other information. Look at the pages I created. They are great examples of the usefulness of wikis. Everyone can update and add to them making them complete and up to date lists and definitions. I would not want to be responsible for any of those pages because I don't know enough about each particular design. Any personal information/research that you would not want messed with belongs on your blog on http://TheHurl.org

We could also have a FAQ here. Most posters to the hurl have similar questions which could be answered. The main thing I like about http://TheHurl.org is the unlimited storage and ability to have discussion attachments. That is great for getting questions answered, but makes a poor reference. The list of questions and discussions/answers is great, and any information that comes from those discussions that may be wanted later should be filtered out and organized in a collective effort, which is what wikis are great for. We can link back to the topics on the hurl if needed, or quote them.

Once we get a community established here, and some content, we may want to have some hurling discussions here, but not the type we have on the Cat-mess (Single threaded project/device driven with lots of videos and pics. Those can stay on the cat-mass designed for them). For now I want to set up a specific type of content (Definitions, links and stuff like that) for this site so it will not get diluted, and will get developed. Once that is done we can expand into more discussions, plans etc.

This does look like a good form for free form discussion, however the Hurl appears far better for the stuff there already. We just need to draw the distinction between answers to specific questions and general information. For now I say lets keep the hurling discussions on the hurl until we get a good picture of the dividing line.

Sound good?

It occured to me that an issue that may be driving the logic here is site revenue. Don't get me wrong, I totally agree that the site should be self-supporting. Anyway you can do this with vBulletin (eg [http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/] ). Just encase the forum with space overhead to run ads.

So basically all the content that is not in the forums and the personal pages?

I think it should be just the opposite. This looks like a very functional forum - good for disscussion.
Whereas, if I make a page on Wiki and other people come along and change it, I might be nonplused.
Maybe I don't fully understand Wiki yet.

There are many things we could have here. We have a forum, file uploads, pages and some other things, but what should we have here?

I think as much as is reasonable be on TheHurl.Org because it is not some random third party host like this is (However nice) and Ron nicely gives us unlimited file space. Here we only get 100 mb so file sharing and personal image galleries need to stay on the hurl along with personal/device related threads which may have temporary images and such because those images pile up fast. Basically these forums will only be for stuff about this wiki site.

So what does go here? Lots of information, just no questions about hurling. (Questions about the site are fine on the forums, hurling questions should be on TheHurl.Org) Information that will continue to be useful should be here. Information about designs, definitions of Abbreviations and Types of Hurling Devices should be here along with some Links, but what else? Maybe a FAQ, Plans, Construction and design tips, statistics, contest information and may other things could be here. What do you think?
